Hi, I don't know if anyone can help me but here goes......

Lola had a litter of 5 kittens last October and 3 of them, 1 girl and 2 boys have stayed with us.  Over the past 2 weeks Lola has been allowing, even encouraging them to suckle.  I seperated the kittens and Lola for 6 days and took Lola to the vets for a check-up.  She isn't producing milk but there is one teat that is more pronounced where the kittens are suckling and she isn't pregnant.  I asked my vet if the suckling action could prevent Lola calling as she has only called twice since giving birth, the last time being at the end of January.  The vet suggested that having kept kittens from Lola's litter could have stopped her calling.  Has anyone else ever experienced this?

Hello Jane,
last year I kept a female kitten from a litter and thought I was doing the right thing by keeping her with her mum, she also started suckling again at around 5 months of age with mum encouraging her to do so, I had to split them up as one teat became very sore and mum had to have antibiotics and cream smoothed around the sore teat, I must admit though neither the kitten or the sore teat stopped my girl calling as she does normally.

Christine.

Hi Christine

Thanks for that.  I am keeping on eye on Lola to make sure she doesn't get sore and will leave her a bit longer to see if she starts calling again.  If she doesn't I will have to take her back to the vets.

hi Jane

I too kept a kitten from my first litter with her Mum, but had no issues with sucking or lack of calling and Mum had a 2nd litter ten months later.  It just shows that every cat is different and you never can tell what they are going to do!

Jenny.

PS. I did have a neutered dog a few years ago who let a young moggie kitten suckle her, she got a sore nipple too!
